Common bite problems
Crowding, spacing, overbite, crossbite and more – explained simply.
Teeth and bites vary a lot. Here are some of the most common problems we see, in plain English.
Crowding
Not enough room, so teeth overlap or twist. Crowded teeth can be harder to clean.
Spacing
Gaps between the teeth.
Prominent top teeth (increased overjet)
The upper front teeth stick out. They are more likely to be knocked and damaged.
Deep bite
The top teeth cover too much of the bottom teeth, and can bite into the gum.
Open bite
The front teeth do not meet when you bite together.
Crossbite
Some top teeth bite inside the bottom teeth. This can shift the jaw to one side.
Underbite
The lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth.
Sound familiar? Book an assessment and we will explain what, if anything, needs treatment. Health service (NHS) patients need a referral from their dentist; private patients can refer themselves. See also children and teenagers and braces for adults.
Questions and answers
Does every bite problem need treatment?
No. Some are mild and only cosmetic. At your assessment we explain what, if anything, needs treatment and what your options are.
Will the health service (NHS) pay to treat my bite?
Only if the problem is severe enough under the IOTN scoring system. Private treatment is available if it does not qualify.
Can adults have these problems treated?
Yes. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy.
