Many children have teeth that are not perfectly straight. Some will benefit from braces, and some will not need them. Here are some things to look out for, and what to do next.
Signs to look for
- Crowded or crooked teeth.
- Upper front teeth that stick out.
- Gaps between the teeth.
- Top and bottom teeth that do not meet properly when your child bites together.
- Adult teeth that seem slow to come through.
If you notice any of these, mention them to your dentist at your child’s next check-up.
The best age to start
For most children, the best time to start brace treatment is between 12 and 14 years old, when most adult teeth have come through. If your child is younger, we may suggest waiting and seeing them again later. Read more about braces for children and teenagers.
How to get an assessment
For health service (NHS) treatment, your child needs a referral from your dentist. For private treatment, you can refer yourself. At the first visit we take a 3D scan and photographs, and explain the options.
