Here are some common things people believe about braces, and the facts.
“I am too old for braces.”
Fact: There is no upper age limit, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. See braces for adults.
“Braces hurt all the time.”
Fact: Teeth usually ache for 3 to 5 days after the brace is fitted or adjusted. Simple painkillers (always check with a parent and follow the instructions on the packet) can help.
“Once braces are off, my teeth will stay straight.”
Fact: Teeth can move back at any age. Wear your retainers every night (8 to 10 hours), for life.
“Everyone can have health service braces.”
Fact: The health service (NHS) only pays when the teeth are significantly out of position, checked with a score called IOTN. Clear aligners are private only.
“I will have to stop playing my instrument.”
Fact: Most wind and brass players get used to playing with a brace, with practice.
“I cannot play sport with braces.”
Fact: You can. Wear a gumshield for contact sports. See sport and braces.
